A dream with the intention of making someone somewhere smile was birthed. With the clients of Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital at heart and in mind, a group of medical students set out to deliberate on ways to chalk up our aim. A 1 Cedi project was started and made known in and outside campus. Students showed a kind gesture by giving money, food items, toiletries, water, clothing and shoes. The proceeds were used to purchase items in addition to what was received from students.
On the 4th of August, a group of medical students set forth to Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital. There was excitement amidst the perceptions each person housed. On arrival, the team was met with smiles by the staff of the hospital. The team was given the Opportunity to visit three wards which were Forster, Sangmuah and Volta. Prior to this we were given instructions. Firstly, taking photographs was prohibited and no money was to be handed over to a client. Forster ward was a place that housed about 45 females who had had acute presentations whereas Sangmuah housed about 60 males. Volta ward was for aged male clients. After introducing ourselves, the team proceeded with sharing drinks and popcorn with the clients. We interacted with the clients and spent about thirty minutes on each ward. That short period was all bliss. Smiles were shared as well as life experiences.
Not the End: Another Beginning
The team moved to the administration for the a presentation that comprised food items, water, toiletries, clothing and shoes. The President Of the Medical Students’ Association, Yussif Musawwir, made the presentation on behalf of the Association to Madam Sarah Obuobi. A memorable day it was, not in just their lifes but in ours as well. This is just the beginning of us making a difference.
